In November a group of young adults with vision impairments attended VICTA’s first photography course in London.

If you are visually impaired, photography might not be the first skill you would think of trying your hand at but our group proved it can be accessible, enjoyable and really help develop your creative skills. With the help of Holger Pooten, founder and head of the London Institute of Photography, our six young people produced incredible images that reflected their own unique views of the world.

We hope you enjoy their gallery below.

A maroon pink coloured face looks toward max as he takes a photo of it using an ipad. He’s stood to the right in a green coat with blond hair. His reflection showing faintly in the dark window of the shop.

A woman, dressed in a cream coat and blue scarf walking in front of an art piece that is on the outside wall of a building. Concealing  her face with her hand in worriment as she does so. Camouflaging into the art piece behind her as it too was cream, red green and blue, pink and brown.

In front of a black background there is an outreached hand coming in from the right side of the image. The fist of the hand has light blue nail polish and is holding onto the bottom of stems of a bouquet of peach coloured roses. The rose buds are slightly blurred and there is a gold reflection of light coming of them. In the top right corner there is also a  light strip which has created a white mark on the image.

This is a high contrast image. It is a image of the Gherkin (a landmark in  London)  standing tall in the background in front of a bright blue sky with scattered white fluffy clouds.

In front of the modern Gherkin is a street corner where there are smaller much older brickwork buildings. The side of the building’s facing the image are darker due to the building being covered in shadow. This is in comparison to the Gherkin and the left side of the older buildings which is bathed in light.

Libby is holding the camera straight in front of her and there is a reflection of the shop in the shop window across the road but has a split between a poster of a person who has been made to look perfect  and below that is Libby photographing the inside of another coffee shop.

This photo is a Vanitas photo that was centred around the subject self. This meant  I had to find things that represented me. I used flowers in a jug and around the jug I put three items. One phone case cover of my cat  Lola. I put my MacBook to the left of the jug with the computer skin of my other cat on display  and I put my Harry Potter luggage tag in the middle leaning against the jug.

Red shopfront by Max Campion

I took this photo is because I really like the colour red and red stands out very well to me. I feel that it is s very bright and exciting colour which people will see on the shopfront. During post production I wanted to bring out the contrast of this red shop so it has depth of contrast which I like within my photography.

During post production I wanted the blue and white to stand out as well because they are also favourite colours of mine.

Red, white and blue represent me as a person and that’s why I brought those colours out on this photo. I wanted the contrast of this photo to really stand out so I could see the outlines within the shopfront making more features visible to me.

Graffiti Face by Max Campion

I took the photograph of the graffiti face so I could see an outline of myself within the photo.

During the post production I wanted to bring out the contrast of the colours even more so I could see the outlines of the face, the eyes, the eyebrows and nose. I wanted to pick out features that describe my face and wanted to try and interpretative the face so it looks kind of like mine. I felt that having a reflection of a face within a photograph would be cool.

I especially like the colour yellow which is at the bottom of the face and I like the colour of green that brings out the eyes within the face. I also like the red on its nose and red with on its forehead. I wanted to bring out more contrast throughout the photo so I could pick out the features of the face.
