This year marks the third successful cycle of VICTA’s Get Workplace Ready programme, an innovative three-month journey designed to help young adults with a vision impairment move confidently towards employment, further education, and independence. Although we’re only partway through, the impact is already unmistakable.

A strong start at the Royal National College for the Blind

The programme began with a residential at the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC), where our 12 participants spent the week immersed in learning, connection, and new experiences. Through classroom sessions and group discussions, the group explored essential employability themes such as effective communication, self-advocacy, career planning, CV development, and interview preparation.

Daya summed it up perfectly:

“I’ve done things I didn’t know I was capable of — VI or not!”

Enrichment through challenge and fun

Alongside structured learning, the programme places a strong emphasis on confidence-building activities. This year’s cohort took part in bowling, axe-throwing, and bouldering — experiences designed to spark resilience, teamwork, and fun.

For many, the social aspect has been just as valuable as the skills gained. Paige shared:

“It’s been great to meet others with similar struggles. It reminds me that we’re all just young people having fun.”

Real progress already taking shape

Even though the programme is only partway through, the momentum is already clear. Several participants have completed college applications, lined up interviews, and taken proactive steps towards their next goals.

Sarah reflected on how transformative the experience has been so far:

“I feel more independent. I’ve made friendships, learned, and laughed. Nothing could top this for me.”

Looking ahead

As the remaining weeks unfold, we look forward to seeing even more growth in confidence, ambition, and workplace readiness. Each year, Get Workplace Ready evolves — and each year, our young adults prove how powerful the right support, opportunities, and community can be.
