I am Michelle, mum of 2, wife, and have a very demanding job, as well as being a fitness instructor.
I am running the London Marathon on behalf of VICTA and in memory of my good friend’s niece Amy, who was helped personally by VICTA when her eyesight was taken from her due to her condition – Wolfram Syndrome. VICTA offered support, encouragement and supplied a laptop, IPAD, software to support Amy’s independence, build her confidence and change her perceptions of what was possible. Sadly, Amy passed away in 2023 and we would really like to raise as much money as possible in memory of Amy who will always be a huge loss to the family.
Can you describe the fundraising initiative?
My husband has been to a few charity golf days, and he has a group of people who often play – the days always do well, and he said he’d help me fundraise by doing this. Golf clubs are very supportive and within the ones that we approached – 4 people gave us a round of golf for 4 people – and people bid for these – and they each made £100 or more.
How much did you raise?
The golf day raised £921.
What surprised you?
The generosity of golf clubs – and that 37 people came to support the day and play golf even though the sun didn’t come out.
Would you do organise this type of event again?
Absolutely – the golf club provide breakfast and food for afterwards – this is a fee – and then you charge your guests extra – so this already starts adding up to your fundraising – bought a few prizes, but also some were donated by friends (wine leftover from Christmas) and it really helped.
What’s your advice for other team members?
If you know people that play golf – it’s a really good fundraiser. They’d play anyway – lots of people said I should keep running marathons so they can keep playing golf 🤣
Would you recommend it to others?
Yes – it was relatively stress free – my husband did all the planning – I turned up on the day, personalised the prizes and let everyone know how grateful I was.
Congratulations to Michelle who’s fundraising is on par with the pros! If you would like any support with your fundraising, drop us an email at fundraising@victa.org.uk.
