My name is Phillipa Rainey. I’m 32, a teacher and I live in Huddersfield. I have only been running since March 2025 and when I was watching the marathon this year, I was in  absolute awe of all the people running. I went out on a whim and thought I’m going to apply for this!

Never in a million years did I think I would be lucky enough to be given this opportunity, especially when I have spoken to so many people who have applied for years and never been lucky!

The reason I chose to run for VICTA is that I wanted to bring more publicity and awareness around small charities. I have worked with VI children in the past and seen how hard it can be for them to access everyday things especially within the education system.

Can you describe the fundraising initiative?

Once I found out I had to raise a certain amount of money, I had thousands of ideas rushing around my brain! I had been to a psychic night before and even though this was not a fundraising event, it attracted a lot of people. I had spoken to a few friends and family members about my idea and they were all onboard. I contacted a psychic who I had been to before and she was more than happy to help fundraise with me.

How much did you raise?

I approached her with a 50/50 offering, so all money that was raised was split evenly. I am still waiting for some funds to come in from it but altogether I raised around £300. I also bought some pizzas in from a local takeaway who were happy to put together a deal for me.

What surprised you?

I was surprised at how many people were happy to pay that little bit extra to attend the event. I was also very lucky to be given the venue for no charge, this saved me a huge amount of money.

Would you do organise this type of event again?

I would love to organise another psychic night as it was a great turn out and it brought a lot of comfort to people!

What’s your advice for other team members?

My advice would be to not be scared to reach out to people within the community as you will be surprised at how many people are willing to donate, especially when it could be something of interest to them and what they would usually spend money on.

Would you recommend it to others?

I would absolutely recommend it for others! I probably did choose a bad time of year to host it, with it being so close to Christmas and many people had already had other plans but if you can get your hands on a local psychic who has an amazing reputation, get yourself a night arranged and you won’t regret it!

We see fundraising success and a shiny medal in Phillipa’s future! If you would like any support with your fundraising, drop us an email at fundraising@victa.org.uk.
