An investment in youth agency is an investment in economic growth and social change
We envision a world where young people who are blind or partially sighted thrive, where their voices are heard, and they influence decisions which affect their lives. Our programmes are designed to help young people build capability and resilience to deal with challenges, and where they are optimistic about their future.
Youth agency is the desire and ability of young people to make decisions and drive change – in their own lives, in their communities, and in their larger spheres of influence. Agency is a right that allows young people to become the architects of their own future.
To have agency, a young person must:
- Have a belief in themselves
- Have knowledge of how to work effectively with others
- Have an understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the world around them
We use activity-based learning, volunteering opportunities and our Student Portal to create both formative experiences and pathways to future opportunities.
Building confidence and equipping young people who are blind or partially sighted to act on their values has a ripple effect across families and communities
When young people possess life skills, they learn how to navigate our rapidly changing world, at home, school, and work
When young people learn how to express themselves clearly, they can more easily resolve conflicts with peers, friends, co-workers and family
When young people with vision impairment engage in their communities and give back, they become role models for siblings and friends
When provided with opportunities to lead, vision impaired young people come up with innovative approaches to addressing issues and can drive change
When young people with vision impairment are informed about their rights, they’re better able to hold leaders and systems accountable
An investment in youth builds our shared future
Young people in the world today represent a wellspring of energy, enthusiasm, and potential. Unfortunately, not all young people receive the same opportunities to unlock that potential. Economic opportunity means young people can access the education, skills, guidance, and connections required to successfully achieve economic security and independence. At VICTA our programmes seek to build those skills and connections to create more opportunities for young people who are blind or partially sighted to find their place in the world.
