Navigating the Transition to Post-16 Education and Beyond

Meet the experts at VICTA and Thomas Pocklington Trust online for a practical session on post-16 education and the part EHCPs have to play.

For the second workshop in our EHCP series, we are delighted to be joined by Nicole Bassett, Education Service Manager at Thomas Pocklington Trust.

Nicole leads the Education Advice Service, providing expert advice and guidance to blind and partially sighted children and young people, as they navigate education from primary and secondary school through to college and university.

Nicole has worked in the sight loss sector for the past three years, having previously managed Disability and Wellbeing Services within Higher Education.

What will the session cover?

This practical session will focus on the transition to post-16 education and the key role of an EHCP during this stage, including:

• Retaining an EHCP post-16 and ensuring that its provisions and stipulations continue to be met.
• Understanding appropriate settings and placements for young people with additional needs.
• Guidance on choosing the right setting and navigating the placement process.
• Ensuring the local authority meets its responsibilities around funding and getting the right support in place.
• Challenging decisions when a local authority does not agree with the provision or placement proposed.
• A look at some of the issues that can arise for young people aged 18+, particularly where their needs and circumstances are more complex.

Whether you are supporting a young person approaching post-16 education or navigating a more complex EHCP situation, this session will provide practical guidance and advice to help you understand your options and advocate for the support they are entitled to.
