Come and volunteer at VICTA’s annual Summer Camp and support teenagers make new friends, create memories and break down barriers.

The VICTA Summer Camp is now in its fifth year after four successful camp’s which were the first of its kind in the UK for teenagers with a vision impairment. Across 8 action-packed days as a volunteer, you will be vital in supporting them to create memories and build new friendships that last a lifetime all following the theme of Advocacy!

VICTA Summer Camp volunteers are crucial to providing the energy and enthusiasm at camp with many campers experiencing their first extended time away from home. You will support them to take part in lots of new and life changing experiences that will encourage them to develop key skills such as communication, teamwork and problem solving as well as increasing their independence and resilience. VICTA’s camps are designed to create a welcoming and inclusive setting so that campers develop a sense of safety and feel compelled to take risks, try new activities and make new friends.

During the day, not only will you take on some thrill-seeking fun such as the 3G swing, Aerial Trek and the zipwire but you will also be participating in a range of other activities, trying your hand at a VI sport, challenging your fellow volunteers for Taskmaster and supporting participants to earn qualifications and certificates. Previous years camps have included days off site bowling and sledging, making and mixing music, trying out VI Rugby, volunteering in the local community and creating nature art.

In the evenings, there will be campfires, games and the opportunity to listen and network with VICTA young adults and guest speakers who have gone on to have success in sport, business and many other fields. There is even a volunteer competition running for the duration of the camp…

As part of the commitment to volunteering at this camp, volunteers arrive at camp a day before the campers for briefing and orientation, the opportunity to explore Youlbury as a new venue to VICTA and an opportunity to refresh on safeguarding and Sighted Guide as well as meeting your fellow volunteers and the VICTA team. We are looking for proactive and enthusiastic volunteers to facilitate a safe and supportive camp while supporting with mealtimes, activities, nurturing new and existing friendships and mobility.

Accommodation, food and activities are provided by VICTA; volunteers will be required to share rooms with other volunteers and/or VICTA staff. For this exciting new venue, accommodation is in an indoor building, of which, VICTA have exclusive use.

Here’s what volunteers have said about previous camps:

  • “The camp was fantastic”
  • “[Activity staff were] very enthusiastic and helpful and keen to learn and adapt to children with visual impairments”
  • “Very helpful and supportive”
