Welcome to the VICTA Science Fair 2025

Thank you to everyone who took part in the VICTA Science Fair 2025, exploring this year’s theme of ‘change and adapt’ and sharing your discoveries! You can enjoy the entries and winners below.

Reused bottle garden activity with VICTA & British Science Week

Try VICTA’s challenge in the British Science Week ‘change and adapt’ themed community pack. Don’t throw your used plastic bottles into the bin – make them into bottle gardens instead!

Your amazing bottle gardens…

Shoots visible within the bottle

Oscar had great results growing some cress shoots!

“I have loved watching my cress grow. It was interesting how the seed popped open and then the cress grew up tall.”

Benji took this photo after growing the seeds for a month and the shoots are doing really well. Benji has enjoyed feeling them as they grow!

Pouring soil into the bottle garden

Dexter’s garden is literally out of this world!

“I had some extra special tomato seeds that have been into space. I have planted them in a lemon squash bottle because it smelt nice. I hope they grow!”

Explore, discover & win!

So many incredible scientific minds! Here are some of the entries into our explore, discover & win competition!

Holding up two Hot Wheels cars. A cool neon title reads 'Comparing speeds of different cars at different heights'

Len and his brother wanted to see how fast 2 different hot wheels cars went down a track set at different heights. They started with 30cm, then 50cm, 70cm and 90cm.

Trying the car out on twisted pipe cleaners

Megan had fun testing her car on different surfaces!

“We used different textures to see how fast the can car could move. My favourite was the car in the pipe cleaners, I like moving and watching the car move as different speeds.”

The cars splashing in the sea!

This young scientist had lots of fun testing our their Hot Wheels cars!

“I went to the beach and tried to get my cars to move on stones, they didn’t go far at all. I then tried, dry sand, wet sand and in the sea water. The cars moved better and further on the wet sand and then in the sea. They did not go far at all on the dry sand, they just got stuck.”

Holding the flame into a mug

Benji has tried a really exciting experiment! Make sure you have grown up present before trying anything using a Bunsen Burner.

“Benji has taken a piece of magnesium ribbon and placed it over the flame of his Bunsen burner. He watched the dull metal transform into a very bright white light. Benji used his new echo dot to learn why this happens, it is because the magnesium burns in the flame to form magnesium oxide, heat and light.”

A boy looks closely into a clear plastic cup with a lid. There is a bright orange liquid inside. He holds a stirring stick and clothes peg in one hand.

Dexter’s rock candy!

“I did the make your own rock candy with my little brother. Mum kept telling me off for eating the sugar.”

*Prize draw winner!*

Dexter’s balloon rocket!

“Me and a friend did the balloon rocket challenge. We guessed who’s rocket would go the furthest. My little brother won which was annoying!”

A boy holding two plastic bottles each with a deflated balloon over the neck.

Dexter’s self-inflating balloons!

“We inflated a balloon without blowing it up. We experimented with different amount of vinegar to see if it would make the balloon bigger.”

A boy smiles with chocolate around his face!

Dexter’s tries the chocolate molecule challenge!

“This experiment was the best ever. I got to eat chocolate and mummy couldn’t tell me off because it was science.”

Amazon show and Amazon Kids Dot

Investigating science with Echo devices

Thanks to VICTA’s partnership with the British Wireless Fund for the Blind (BWFB) we were able to provide Science Fair participants wit their very own Alexa Echo Shows and Echot dots! Thanks for sharing the fun you’ve been having investigating!

A boy stands in a space themed room smiling next to his Alexa Dot

William loves space! Mum tells us:

“He is obsessed with space and would like to be the first blind person to go to space so his questions were all about our universe. He found out that the largest planet is Jupiter, although larger planets do exist but we can’t get close enough to them yet. The smallest planet in the universe is Kepler 37b, which is not much bigger than our moon but much smaller than mercury. He also asked Alexa how many atoms in the universe but the number was too big for us to even recognise and is getting bigger as we discover more!”

A boy hugs a soft toy chicken and holds his Alexa Dot which looks like an owl.

Dexter finds out more about his favourite animal!

“I love chickens and I have been asking Alexi all about how chickens make their eggs.”

*Prize draw winner!*

Benji is exploring science through Audible!

“We have downloaded the audible app, and Benji has enjoyed listening to science audio books every night when he’s gone to bed. Benji absolutely loves science, especially chemistry, he has used a lot of his new knowledge he has gathered from his echo dot to create his own YouTube channel where he talks about chemical elements from the periodic table!!”

Dayzie’s been busy exploring with her Echo Show!

“I used my amazon echo show to find out how dogs were involved in science!” She found out using her Amazon Echo Show dogs are involved in going to the moon. And, used her Echo Show to enhance her knowledge about how technology was invented. She learnt who created it, when and how it was created.
