I’m Kayleigh I’m 25 and I’m running the London Marathon for VICTA in 2026!
I’ve always been into sport even when I wasn’t very good at it and one of the highlights of my school years was sports day. So when it came to thinking of a fun way to raise money, it just felt right to bring that childhood tradition back to life with my very own charity sports day!
What were the steps you had to take to organise this event?
I quickly realised there’s a lot more to running a sports day than just blowing a whistle and handing out medals.
The first step was deciding which events to include I wanted a to include the classics like the sack race, egg and spoon, three legged race. Luckily, I’d trialled a version of the event last year, so I already had some equipment.
Once I knew what events I was running and how I wanted to run them, I started inviting friends and family, and split everyone into teams to make it competitive but light-hearted. I made an itinerary to keep the day running smoothly, I also made booklets for the referees with the rules and set up! Then of course no sports day is complete without medals. I actually designed and printed the medals at work, and with my mum and sister’s help, we sewed the ribbons together so they felt really special.
What was the highlight of the event for you?
The best part for me was seeing everyone throwing themselves into the games and having such a good time especially in the name of charity! My favourite event was the egg and spoon race because we included a rule that meant anytime the egg came off your spoon you had to spin twice on the spot and we used bouncy eggs to make it more entertaining, as a race it was so much fun and watching our teammates was so entertaining each heat was a photo finish, everyone was particularly competitive!
It was really heart-warming to see people of all ages joining in and cheering each other on. Knowing that we were all there not just to have fun but also to support such an amazing cause made it even more special.
Were there any challenges you faced along the way?
The biggest challenge was definitely the logistics! From making sure I had enough equipment, to keeping everything on schedule, checking the weather forecast in case I needed a last-minute back-up plan, even to make sure that the grass in the field wasn’t getting too long! It was a lot of work behind the scenes, but everyone had an amazing day which made every bit of effort worthwhile.
Would you organise an event like this again and would you recommend this to others?
I’m definitely planning on doing it again and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and creative way to raise money. It’s a brilliant excuse to get people together, bring out a bit of healthy competition, and raise funds for a cause you care about at the same time. It’s safe to say my charity sports day is going to become a yearly tradition, and I can’t wait to build on it again next time!
