I am Michelle, mum of 2, wife, and have a very demanding job, as well as being a fitness instructor.

I am running the London Marathon on behalf of VICTA and in memory of my good friend’s niece Amy, who was helped personally by VICTA when her eyesight was taken from her due to her condition – Wolfram Syndrome.  VICTA offered support, encouragement and supplied a laptop, iPad, software to support Amy’s independence, build her confidence and change her perceptions of what was possible.  Sadly, Amy passed away in 2023 and we would really like to raise as much money as possible in memory of Amy who will always be a huge loss to the family.

Can you describe the fundraising initiative? (Where did it take place, when did you do it, how did you do it, who was involved, why did you do it, where did the idea come from?)

I have always enjoyed a party – think wedding-style dance tunes with UV lights and lots of fun. It took place at a local cricket club. I hired a DJ, brought UV accessories from Shein – and had lots of donations for a raffle from local charities.

How much did you raise?

I raised £1477.38 on the night! My friend Sarah donated £22.62 afterwards, so that the total would be £1500!

What surprised you?

The generosity of local charities compared to corporate companies.

Would you do organise this again?

I really enjoyed the night – but it was stressful during the lead up to the night, with people cancelling last minute and not committing to buying a ticket. But the night was amazing – many people supported me – and lots of fun was had.

What’s your advice for other team members?

Try not to stress before a fundraising event – raising money is hard and life is expensive, but people will support and they will be much kinder than you may think.

Would you recommend it to others?

Yes – it was a really good night – and I exceeded by target, I have now raised £3,419 to empower vision impaired young people!

Congratulations to Michelle who is glowing with fundraising success! If you would like any support with your fundraising, drop us an email at fundraising@victa.org.uk.
