Adventure Driving Day for blind & partially sighted 14-17s

On the 17 January 2026, 18 of our 14-17s took part in a driving day at Adventure Sports Centre in Warwick. The day involved three activities: 4×4 off road driving, rifle and pistol shooting and reverse steer buggy driving.

“I may never drive on the road, but the 4×4 experience showed me there are no limits on what I can achieve.”

The 4×4 off roading allowed us to get behind the wheel of a Land Rover and drive it up and down the steep hills of the offroad course. This was a great activity as it allowed our young people to experience driving in a safe and fun environment.

“Being unable to drive has been one of the most difficult things for [my son] to accept about his sight loss. He is now 17 and so many of his friends are currently learning to drive and gaining that independence he will never have. The opportunity to try driving for himself was brilliant and he loved the experience.”

Rifle and pistol shooting was popular. This involved learning how to load the gun, aim and shoot. The rifles had a scope that made it easier to aim. The targets were able to be moved closer and further away to change the difficulty. We also got to take our targets home afterwards.

Reverse steer buggy driving meant that when the wheel was turned left, the buggy went right and vice versa. The driver was blindfolded and the two participants sat at the back had to use code words for ‘right’ and ‘left’ to direct the driver through a course of flags. This was difficult but a lot of fun – even the staff and volunteers got involved!
