The tactile medal winners

To celebrate the 2021 Paralympic Games we challenged you to come up with your own tactile, accessible medal design. It was too close to call, so we have joint winners – Caitlin Passey, age 7 and Benji Bates, age 6. Congratulations, enjoy your sports vouchers!

The winners

Caitlin Passey, age 7

“Caitlin chose to do the medal in a star shape because anyone who wins a medal is a star. She put balls on each corner so each point of the star can be felt. The orange part is shaped like a cape because they are heroes. The blue shapes are waves to represent her favourite sport, diving.”

Caitlin’s medal has been crafted using layers of different coloured air dried clay. Well done Caitlin, it’s a lovely medal with lots of fantastic tactile detail!

Benji Bates, age 6

“Benji wanted to create a swimming medal after recently going swimming on holiday.”

Benji’s medal has been made using a large circle of cardboard which has been covered with silver foil. The bottom half is covered in purple cellophane  covered in different sequins to create the water. The waves are made from blue clay to stand out as another layer with a black clay swimmer silhouette coming out of the water.  Benji has used raised braille to write ‘reach for the stars’ and ‘swimming silver’ across the top of the medal.
