Our VICTA Young Achievers have been busy this year! Children who have a vision impairment and their families have been getting involved right across the country and enjoying completing the award at home, ticking off four exciting themes — Science, Nature, Community and Create.

Children completed three activities per theme to earn their collectable pin badges. They’ve been experimenting, planting, volunteering, crafting and so much more, all while building confidence and exploring their interests. Families share photos and videos as they go, and we celebrate each milestone with certificates, badges and finally a very special braille medal. Whether taking part independently at home or joining us at one of our themed family days to earn a badge in one go, it’s been wonderful to see so many Young Achievers — and their Super Siblings — making progress toward their medals, with some even returning for Silver, Gold and Sparkly levels!

Science

Between January and March, our Young Achievers have been busy experimenting and earning their science badges. Some examples include creating a bottle garden, dropping mentos into Coca Cola, playing with magnets and lots more!

Nature

Between April and June, our Young Achievers have been developing their green fingers by taking part in our sunflower race – we received lots of lovely pictures from this. Some other tasks included growing vegetables, creating hedgehog houses, looking at a butterfly’s life cycle and visiting public gardens.

Community

Between July and September, VICTA set a challenge to complete our Kindness Bingo – this contained 25 tasks to tick off. This was super popular and lots of Young Achievers earned their Community badge from taking part. A few other tasks included VI awareness talks, litter picking and donating old toys.

Create

Between October and December VICTA held our annual Christmas tree decoration competition which counted towards the Young Achievers Create badge. We had lots of entries to this – it was difficult to pick the winners! Well done to everyone that took part, all the decorations were lovely. Some other tasks included baking, song performances and braille art.

In addition to all of this at-home fun, we had two Young Achievers Family Days in 2025, where participants could come together and earn their badge in a day!

  • Science day at the Winchester Science Centre in March
  • Nature day at the Wilderness Foundation, Essex, in August
